End of Year Marathon

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he last part of December went by quickly like the flashing green light on the street. End of the year is never been my choice to go on a vacation. It is high season, rainy season, and certainly would be too crowded for me. But like any other impulsive decision I made this year, life always surprises you. I got 3 days business trip to Singapore last week. Staying on star hotel in the heart of the city is never been on my bucket list. At night, I roamed the city alone, as I used to be. Eating in cheap hawker food and buying cheap souvenirs. The city still feels familiar, the warmth of solitary in the middle of hustling crowds. It was raining and as I stand waiting the train that would take me back to the airport, I told myself.

I can get used to these surprises.

I booked a one way train ticket the day after. My first trip at New Year’s Eve. As a member of stay-home-family-at-every-new-year, I used to spend time rolling around the house, burning something, watching superheroes movie for the million times on TV, and fall asleep before the New Year’s countdown. So, I don’t expect anything less than overpriced hotel rent and crowded street. But I could use the comforting strangeness every trip could bring. Few days before the trip and I don’t even plan any place to visit. I visited the city quite often and I think I wanted to be surprised. Maybe it would be rain all day, maybe there’s traffic, maybe it was a bad idea afterall, but then I could care less.

Bring it on.

Deathproof (2007)

Like the year before, I spent this Christmas holiday at home. Wrapped up under blanket, with too many mineral water and tortilla chips beside my bed. Writing crap about how another year has went by and I might missed another train. The thoughts about how other people achieve many things this year has passed me again. Weirdly enough, it didn’t stay too long. Maybe, just maybe, I could care less about them again.

I spent a lot of amount of time watching Quentin Tarantino’s movies in bed. The Hateful Eight opens on Christmas and I thought it’d be great to re-watch all 7 movies before this (too bad I skipped Django Unchained).

Growing up, all I want to be is being a filmmaker like John Lasseter and Andrew Stanton. After watching The Virgin Suicide, I want to kick ass like Sofia Coppola. Then, after the Kill Bill era, all I want to be is Quentin Tarantino. There’s something about his movies that I find so alluring.

Kill Bill Vol. 1 (2003)

No, it’s not the blood and the gore theme. It’s not the setting or the scattered timeline. It’s not about the intense scene, the colors of the movie, the soundtracks, or any magnificent shots.

Tarantino writes and directs everything he loves, he doesn’t care if there’s nobody loves it, or nobody gets it. He will still shot it. But his passion reached me, like a ray of sunshine that peeks between the curtains. In the end, all I want to do is wide open the curtains, asking for more. There’s nothing more I want than being someone like that. Being a pirate king, sailing forward. Believing in something, great enough that everybody started to believe it too.

Inglourious Basterds (2009)

Tarantino always writes long lines, repeated sentences, and he’s not afraid to insert insulting or forbidden words. He believes that words should be a sharp critics in its true from.

The Hateful Eight (2015)

His latest movie, The Hateful Eight, has been shot in a glorious 70mm films, allowing him to shoot a wide panoramic shot. Funny thing is, instead of exploits this advantages, Tarantino shot most of the movie in a single claustrophobic room. Relying on dialogue and mind tricks, like his earlier limited budget flicks. Tarantino does make a point, when making a movie, all you need are a well written script and a good storytelling to move the story forward.

I might forget the dreams of being a filmmaker long way ago. And I don’t know which one is sadder, the fact that I’m afraid that the career won’t make a steady job or the fact that I threw away my-almost-15-years-worth-of-dream without looking back. Then again, despite of what I do for a living now, I still want to be like Quentin Tarantino.

Hell with everybody else.

Three tomatoes are walking down the street – a poppa tomato, a momma tomato, and a little baby tomato.

Baby tomato starts lagging behind.

Poppa tomato gets angry, goes over to the baby tomato, and squishes him… and says,

‘Ketchup.’

The Odd Admiration Named Barasuara

It was back on 2009 when Arctic Monkeys released Web Transmission. A 20 minutes performance of their then upcoming album Humbug. There was a chilling presence as each track revealed, a weird excitement, a bizarre amusement. That moment, I was sure I’ll be wanting to hear them more.

Today, the same odd admiration came to me. The layered sound and melody, the unusual song pattern, the word choices. The same chilling presence came back when I heard (and watched) Barasuara.

I might not be following the indie music scene too much here in Indonesia and my choice can only be limited to few bands like The Adams, Mocca, Sore, Float, Efek Rumah Kaca, and few others. Which most songs I believe I heard somewhere between the original soundtrack of some Indonesian movies. But Barasuara is an exception. I will quote Teguh Wicaksono’s foreword on the description on the video:

“Originally formulated as a one-man project, Iga’s decision to grant democracy to other members of Barasuara is spot on. With that line-up, making the rest of the member as additional players will be plain foolish. Already well-known bandmates Marco Steffiano, Gerald Situmorang, Asteriska Cabrini, Puti Chitara and TJ Kusuma are not only doing what they told to do, but also contribute substantial amount of power and clarity into the songs. Listening to the session, I am continuously awed by Marco’s smart, loud but tidy drumming. Producing the right sound, in the right time with the right volume is not a skill any drummer could do, especially faced with Barasuara’s steady but shifty approaches.

Songwriting is responsibly fresh, sound treatment is top-notch. Arrangement department is a nutritious delicacy for the hungry souls: you will recognise some Tinariwen juice, Sondre Lerche appetiser served with Jack White as Entree and some DD Dumbo as dessert. While the existence of backup singers in a band usually ended with question marks, the tranquility promised by Asteriska and Puti is far from ineffective, in fact they are the secret game changer of the whole Barasuara experience. Another thing that I noticed from Barasuara is they put real effort to avoid cliches. Right when you start to identify the pattern of the songs, suddenly they mutated into a different dimension, revitalised the songs for a moment before finally entering the punishing closure.”

My favorite ones are Bahas Bahasa and Sendu Melagu. Afterall, it was the exact weird excitement and bizarre amusement. I know instantly that I’ll be wanting to hear them more.

PS: Barasuara’s first album, Taifun, will be released on October 16, 2015. If you are an Apple user, pre-order here at iTunes.

The Game and The Song

It is easy to fall in love with Game of Thrones, the infamous HBO original TV Series, following the success of The Sopranos, Six Feet Under, or True Blood. I like fantasy movie and Game of Thrones gave all of those in one hell of a series. As each layers unveiled, there is more and more action, there is more and more story to discuss. The creatures, the dragon, the myth, the King beyond the Wall, the undead, the God of Light. As if all element of story is there. You got the action, the drama, the mystery, the fantasy, love, sex, politics, war, everything.

It is a different tale than The Lords of The Ring trilogy, which the original book series—The Song of Ice and Fire has always been compared to. If I’m going to say one distinct thing that I love more about Game of Thrones it is how George RR Martin made his characters so alive. How he painted each character as a protagonist, as well as an antagonist.

It reminds me of the story of Mahabharata, the tale about Pandawa and Kurawa that have been told million times, on different cultures. As a child, I watched the TV series (originally made by Indians, broadcasted at Indonesian local TV channel) with my dad. We used to record it on VHS and watched it together after my dad got back from work. I also owned the comic book written by the legend, R.A. Kosasih (PS: You can order your copy at Anelinda if you’re interested).

The story about Mahabharata isn’t entirely about good versus evil, which I found so confusing at that time. Yudhistira the eldest of the Pandawa, being portrayed wise and always telling the truths, gambled his own wife—Drupadi—at a dice game. That was the most interesting scene that I remember (along with Baratayudha war), the gambling table and how Sangkuni threw the dice. Drupadi, being a faithful wife to all Pandawa (yes, all the Pandawa shared Drupadi as their wife) is actually a racist. Bima, which always portrayed as a strong and reliable knight is a jock and a bully. He teased the Kurawas, challenged them into battle, and in the end, out powered them.

Growing up, it is weirder to see people portrayed them as heroes. Many babies named after the Pandawa just because they would make a good role model, it is amusing to find how I haven’t met someone named after Karna. Yeah and then there is Karna. You should read about this character and you’ll get exactly the point why the story of Mahabharata is so interesting to discuss. If we look closer at each character and giving reasons to their action, you’ll realized that it is just the same formula. When you’re playing the game of thrones, you either win, or you die.

Just like Drupadi, the women in Game of Thrones often seen as a consolation prize. Political marriage arranged to gain power and strengthen position, as if they are nothing than a tool to seal the deal. They’ve been raised knowing what would be their fate and how to deal with it. But what I like about Game of Thrones is some female characters in the series portrayed as a bad ass rebel, a strong force that ride on Dragons or become the assassins. But even characters that look like an annoying bitch has a depth story. Look Sansa for example.

Original image can be found here, along with easy guide of Game of Thrones.

The series also famously said to have political reference because each character represents a house, a banner (as well as a sigil and a motto) that identified them. They live to it, sworn to it, die with it. Here I quoted one of interesting conversation between the Shae and Master of Whisperers, Varys.

Varys: If you let yourself believe that a foreign girl with no name could spend her life with the son of Tywin Lannister…

Shae: I have a name.

Varys: You have one name. As do I. Here only the family name matters.

It is more interesting to discuss because there is some people that called themselves as ‘The Brotherhood without Banner’, the name that George RR Martin took from his fan group name.

After all, Game of Thrones hooked me with such angle of storytelling. It is weird that you have so many character that you actually root for instead of just one hero. It does make me seeing the world more colorful, even if it is a dark color.

“Let me give you some advice, bastard: Never forget what you are. The rest of the world will not. Wear it like armor, and it can never be used to hurt you.

Glee-ing

Leaving the ultimate cliffhanger after almost 3 seasons long, Glee is going on hiatus for 7 weeks. Here I’m asking you, do you enjoy Glee? I wrote a review of this charming TV serial in here a long time ago. You know, I personally, love cheesy movies. But Glee isn’t one of it. I do love Glee (and I have two red and yellow Glee T-shirt as worn by some fans in Oprah show) as a whole package of entertainment. But not when it gets overrated.

If you are one of the 9gag zombies, you know how overrated Glee got criticized. And if you’re one of the fans of some singer/band, you know how overrated Glee fans commented about the original song (or sometimes wondering how on earth people don’t know Bohemian Rhapsody is first sung by Queen, not Glee). Excessive things always lead to destruction.

The early season of Glee is winning my heart for its charming characters and its great songs. The series started by recycling all 70s – 80s songs, from Journey to Fleetwood Mac, from Van Halen to The Rolling Stone. The series kicked off strong by bringing great issues like teen pregnancy, bullying, homosexuality, religion, and some interesting storyline. The response is overwhelming, Oprah invited them to the show and many art programs and show choir inspired by it. Lea Michele and Chris Colfer got their spots in TIME’s 100 Most Influential People and Billboard seems to love them. The spotlight came most likely from people who shared the same story. Dumped into the trash bin, humiliated, being the underdog, fear, denial, there’s a loser inside all of us that in such way got connected with the characters. Many lives saved, the relation between the viewers and the characters becoming so strong as they found courage on the show.

The Glee phenomenon continued when they strikes back in their second and third seasons. They introduced us to more music, Florence and the Machine, Neon Trees, FUN, even Young the Giant (Cough Syrup video hits their 2 million viewers the night Glee aired the episode On My Way which featured the song). They added more musical songs, they did songs from The Rocky Horror, the West Side Story, Wicked, Chorus Line, Dreamgirls, etc. They made tribute episode, Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, Madonna, and Michael Jackson. Then all the shenanigans started. They started recycling EVERY hit song, they mashed up some brilliant songs into weird ones, they went from Rihanna to Katy Perry, from Maroon5 to Bruno Mars (even LFMAO or whatever the name is). The storyline (or love relationship) got annoyingly messy as they try to pair every member to another and the kiss became so intense and gross. But in such a way, they constantly given message to society that said it is okay to be different, to be brave, to fight all the stereotypes. And yeah, many people cheered watching Kurt Hummel and Blaine Anderson’s kiss on national television (which later that day got into the trending with hash tag #TheyKissed).

Until today, I still watched Glee. They still kept their charms by showing even quirkier and freakier characters, which I love. But I know it is overrated to hate the show, the same way as to love the show. Glee is still maintaining their high ratings and I just wish they stop singing ALL Billboard songs. I’m still looking forward to more Glee, and seeing how they inspired many other people to start a better day.

A while ago, I read my friend tweeted that said more or less like this, “Lea Michele should stay at Broadway, Glee is just a waste of talent for her”. I agree for the talents side, but I thought, Lea Michele could have stay at Broadway, won a Tony or two. But rather, she chose to be an annoying bitch that sounds amazing in Glee and then, saved lives. An easy choice.
