Yesterday, I was stunned watching American Crime Story’s first episode. The People vs OJ Simpson.
Ryan Murphy is one of a kind.
Murphy started his career by creating a teen drama titled Popular (1999). A series of two opposing high school girls forced to get along when their parents decided to get married. The series surprisingly played in local TV station back in those days and I genuinely love it.
When the TV series Glee (2009) hit the spotlight, I cannot help but love the show. It’s not just about the musical number. There’s the right amount of satiric comedy and also empowering messages to the audience. It is uplifting, and at the same time, mocks the generation.
Then, American Horror Story (2011) comes and suddenly risen to be one of my favorite TV Series. The show is outrageous. Combining real-life event with myth, creating thrilling series that made you addicted. The latest installment of American Horror Story titled Hotel, casts Lady Gaga as one of the main actresses and sent her to win Golden Globe.
After the Glee era, people expected Murphy to revive the teen drama atmosphere. Scream Queens (2015) drops last year and made the perfect addition to Murphy’s shelves. Inspired by classic horror flicks, Scream Queens is a black comedy about sorority campus life. The jokes are brutal, the script is written with more mockery, and the result is hilarious.
American Crime Story (2016) is the latest anthology created by Murphy. The 10 episode mini-series centers around the criminal case of a football player and actor, OJ Simpsons, back on 1994 to 1995. Dubbed The Trial of The Century, the case of a double murder of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Lyle Goldman gained spotlight of American people that time. Not only it had the right amount of drama and scandal, it also touched the racial aspect.
The case also brought some people to fame. If you are asking what is the one thing responsible to bring Kardashian family to fame, this is the place you should be looking for. Robert Kardashian is a close friend of Simpsons’ family and has been included on Simpsons’ lawyer team.
What’s so special about the case? Here’s what Wikipedia said when OJ Simpson’s verdict was read:
An estimated 100 million people worldwide stopped what they were doing to watch or listen to the verdict announcement. Long-distance telephone call volume declined by 58% and trading volume on the New York Stock Exchange by 41%, water usage decreased as people avoided using bathrooms, and government officials postponed meetings. So much work stopped that the verdict cost an estimated $480 million in lost productivity.
That’s insane. It must be something really important or something really unimportant, that made people avoided using bathrooms and decreased water usage.
Aside from all those dramas, American Crime Story has an amazing set of cast. Sara Paulson shines in her role, portrayed the lead prosecutor, Maria Clark. The story is compelling. The camera moves slowly, narrates the story in an intense way. Many new perspectives were brought to the table and I cannot wait to watch the next episode.
Funny that the same thing occurs in our country right now. The death of Wayan Mirna Salihin has gained eyes from all over the country. The case took places in January where the use of cyanide substances has been indicated as the weapon of murder. People made theories and speculations (and also judgment) when Mirna’s friend who presents at the crime scene, Jessica Kumala Wongso, accused as the main suspect. It gets wilder, people sprawl more theories and some motives, one includes the theory that Jessica and Mirna are a former lover. The case becomes more intrigued because there is no strong evidence shown until now. Kafe Olivier, the crime scene which located in a prestigious mall in the center of Jakarta, gains fame and the fatal Vietnam Coffee Ice becomes the most ordered menu.
